-
President and Co-Founder at HealthoZone Inc.
1993 - 2002Expert System delivering dietary care. The service's approach and medical care functionality was designed by a team of doctors, dietitians, nutritionists, chefs and software developers. The system provided expert dietary care to people, doctors, clinics and hospitals. It analyzed people's eating habits and their preferences and then produced a menu of 5 eating episodes a day (3 meals and 2 snacks), along with recipes and a shopping list of ingredients, all based on their favorite ways to eat. Doctors and hospitals across Canada including the Ottawa Heart Institute, treated more than 4,000 people. But selling anyone a diet is a difficult process and after trying everything I knew, and after getting much "expert advice", I eventually came to understand that you can sell things to people that they want but don't need, but you can't sell them anything they need but don't want. We closed the company.
-
Director of DEFT Tools at Sybase Inc
1991 - 1993I was hired by Sybase when they acquired my company Deft. My mission was to design and build a product merging Deft and Sybase technology, to model a company instead of just its systems. Unfortunately the project never succeeded - (many issues to do with culture shock created in both engineering departments as a result of the acquisition).
-
CEO, President and Founder at DEFT Software Inc,
1988 - 1991DEFT designed, marketed and sold a CASE product called Deft, which allowed people to model software systems on a Mac, compile their designs (an error check and translation to object code), and generate the resulting computer application, to run on a VAX/VMS system using an RDBMS (Oracle, Sybase, RDBMS, or DB2.) Deft was able to reverse engineer one of these RDBMS schemas into its dicitonary, produce a model of the database and then generate the code into your RDBMS of choice. Established a network of distributors for the product in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, France, UK, Australia, USA and Brazil. The company was acquired by Sybase because they recognized the increase in productivity it offered their own users. A programmer using Sybase at that time interacted with it via its Application Program Interface (SQL and C computer languages), on a CRT computer screen with green horizontal and vertical bars to shape input forms and fields which the user tabbed through. Deft offered these programmers a Macintosh GUI with drag&drop editing to design forms & reports; models to design and create their databases and triggers (stored procedures); and program logic, thus greatly reducing the need to write computer code.
-
VP Software Development and Co-Founder at TSB International
1982 - 1988TSB designed and built hardware and software products aimed at large TelCos. The product began life as a Call Detail Reporting system with the hardware located on each client's premises, connected via dial-up lines to a central Service Bureau. We developed this further into alarm monitoring and control systems using a variant of the hardware placed adjacent to each telephone switch (Central Office or Exchange), connected to the Main Control center for each TelCo. The company went public on the TSE in the early 90s.
-
Vice President and Co-Founder at Disus Inc
1980 - 1988I co-founded the company with 4 other partners and subsequently built our custom software development business to provide large-scale solutions to clients such as NASA, EXXON, Neslte, Canron and many other F500 companies in Canada, the U.K, Europe and Australia. I learned a great deal about the software development process managing these projects, and invented the Computer-Aided Software Engineering tool (later to become Deft) while designing these systems. Using Deft, I analyzed workflows and processes for many of the these organizations, resulting in large scale projects to implement the newly optimized systems.
